Details:
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a small number of master workshops in Markneukirchen, Germany distinguished themselves by developing some of the best varnishes of the modern era. The varnish we use on our model 405 instruments emulates these exceptional varnishes from a century ago.
The model 405 viola pictured above is an example of the Tertis pattern, available in several of Eastman Strings’ models. This viola is also special because it has a one piece slab-cut poplar back. Many early Italian makers used poplar for their violas and cellos. Poplar tends to promote a rich bass sound. This model is available with poplar backs in limited numbers.
