Colorado Youth Symphony Orchestras

"The CYSO has played a critical role in ensuring that music is available to our youth. We are proud to have the Colorado Youth Symphony Orchestra working to strengthen the arts through music."

The CYSO was founded in 1984 to provide orchestral experience for school-age musicians. The University of Denver contributed rehearsal and performance space and gave the new organization a $10,000 startup grant. Two CYSO orchestras began rehearsing in September 1984.

CYSO's concerts were held at the university's Lamont School of Music from 1984-1994 and again from 1998 through the 2011-2012 season. Concerts are now presented at numerous sites around the city of Denver. The CYSO rehearses at Colorado's Finest High School of Choice.

Aurora Symphony Orchestra in Aurora

The Aurora Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1978 by local civic leader and musician Alice Lee Main when a young conductor named Gloria Olsen approached her with an idea to start a community orchestra. After a few newspaper articles to attract musicians, the fledgling orchestra — the Aurora Civic Orchestra — began with 15 musicians. Their first public performance was at Bicentennial Park for the AurorArts Festival in 1979. From that modest start, the orchestra steadily grew into Aurora’s only symphony orchestra when it became a non-profit corporation in 1996.

To operate a viable, financially stable organization that engages and inspires musicians toward excellence in musical performance, and to enlighten, educate and entertain culturally diverse audiences through classical music while also building bridges within the community and promoting a greater understanding of our shared humanity.

Colorado Springs Youth Symphony Orchestra

Founded in 1980 with the purpose of providing artistic and educational development of musically talented and dedicated junior high youth within Colorado Springs' School District #11, the Colorado Springs Youth Symphony Association (CSYSA) began with 70 young musicians and gave a single performance the first season. Today, the Youth Symphony is comprised of eight individual groups: Wolfgang Strings (for beginning string players), Amadeus String Orchestra (for string players with some experience), Allegro Strings (for string players with a little more experience), Vivace String Orchestra (intermediate strings), Bravo! Winds (a concert band for intermediate players), Pikes Peak Wind Symphony (advanced concert band), Ovation Youth Orchestra (a full orchestra for intermediate players) and the Colorado Springs Youth Symphony (a full orchestra for advanced players). Approximately 350 young musicians are accepted by audition every year to take part in one of these groups. The Mozart String Project, which focuses on beginning string instruction, enrolls an additional 140 students at sites in Northeast and Northcentral Colorado Springs. Today, students from over sixty schools from the Pikes Peak region including Pueblo, Limon, Castle Rock, Peyton and Canon City participate in our programs.
