Springfield Symphony Orchestra

The Springfield Symphony Orchestra performed its first concert in 1944, at its current home - Springfield Symphony Hall, which was originally built as the Municipal Auditorium. That performance received great reviews and was even recorded by the Office of War Information for rebroadcast to our troops overseas. Click here for more information about the history of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra.

Today, the SSO is the largest Massachusetts symphony outside of Boston. It consists of over 80 musicians from the NE region of the United States and Canada, and holds many performances in a given season - as either the full orchestra or in ensemble formats. The Springfield Symphony Orchestra is led by internationally acclaimed American conductor Kevin Rhodes, who has held the post since 2001.

Nashoba Youth Orchestra

Two Groton musicians, Michael Manugian and Ruth Treen Wise, founded the Nashoba Valley Chorale in 1976. The Chorale quickly became an important cultural resource in the area, drawing singers who come from towns in the heart of the Nashoba Valley as well as all over the metro-west area of Boston and southern New Hampshire. We are now based in Littleton, where we are part of a strong arts community which includes Indian Hill Music Center and the Cannon Theatre.

The Chorale currently has 130 members singing under the direction of Anne Watson Born. Although we are a non-audition chorus, we do set high performing standards. Our mission is to study, prepare, and present great choral music with musicality and attention to phrasing, articulation, and diction. Recent performances, with orchestra, include: Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Requiem, and Bach’s Cantata No. 21.

Pioneer Valley Symphony

One of the oldest community orchestras in the United States, the PVS was founded to serve the Pioneer Valley through music in three ways: by performing symphonic and choral music; by providing members of the community the opportunity to participate in making music; and through musical education, particularly by introducing young children to live orchestral music.

Founded in Greenfield in 1939, the full orchestra performs in Northampton and Amherst as well, drawing its audience from the wider Pioneer Valley. The dynamic leadership of Music Director Paul Phillips provides professional musical direction for over 200 volunteer musicians.
